Ute Lemper's career is vast and varied. She has made her mark on the stage, in films, in concert and as a unique recording artist. She has been universally praised for her interpretations of Berlin Cabaret Songs, the works of Kurt Weill and French chanson, her own origunal material, Yiddish song interpretations and for her portrayals on Broadway and in London 's West End, in Paris , Rome , Madrid , Sydney , etc. |
Ms. Lemper has won numerous awards and accolades for her portrayals on stage, among them both the American Theatre Award and the Laurence Olivier Award for Velma Kelly in Chicago on Broadway and in the West End in London , as well as the French Moliere Award for Sally Bowles in the Paris Production of Cabaret .
Born in Munster , Germany , she was a student at The Dance Academy in Cologne and the Max Reinhardt Seminary Drama School in Vienna . At the beginning of her theatrical career, Ms. Lemper starred in Peter Pan, Cabaret, The Blue Angel, the Weill Revue , and a Maurice Bejart ballet created for her, La Mort Subite . Accomplished in both the solo concert and symphony stage, Ms. Lemper has performed to audiences at the world's most prestigious venues including La Scala ( Milan ), The Sydney Opera House, Barbican Theatre ( London ) and The Kennedy Center ( Washington , D.C. ). Her symphony concerts include performances with the London Symphony, Boston Symphony, Berlin Symphony, and San Francisco Symphony Orchestras.
Ms. Lemper's 2004-2006 seasons includes her first collaboration with the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra. After a three week tour of Europe , with concerts in Spain , Germany , Vienna and Paris , the tour culminates with a performance in CARNEGY Hall.
A renowned recording artist, Ms. Lemper was named Billboard Magazine's Crossover Artist of the Year for 1993-1994. Her recording career began in 1987, when she signed an exclusive contract with Decca. She has since released more then 12 albums. For Punishing Kiss (2000), Ms. Lemper collaborated with artists Elvis Costello, Nick Cave , Tom Waits and Lauri Anderson. The release of 2003 was But One Day , which features new arrangements of Weill, Brel, Piazolla, Heymann and Eisler songs, as well as the first recordings of her own compositions. There is currently a film being made about Ms. Lemper's work. It will be out summer 2007 together with a new album of all original songs. Her latest release was in 2005/2006 “UteLemper LIVE at the Carlyle in NYCity” on CD and DVD.
In film, her many credits include L'Autrichienne (Pierre Granier-Deferre), Prospero's Books (Peter Greenaway), Moscow Parade (Ivan Dikhovichni), Pret a Porter (Robert Altman), Bogus (Norman Jewison) and the most recent releases, Combat de Fauves (Benoit Lamy), A River Made to Drown In (James Merendino) and Appetite (George Milton). She has appeared on television in Rage/Outrage, The Dreyfus Affair (Arte), Ute Lemper Sings Kurt Weill (Bravo), Illusions (Granada ), Songbook (Volker Schloendorff), The Wall (Rogers Waters) and The Look of Love (Gillian Lynn).
Ms. Lemper currently lives in New York with her partner Todd Turkisher and their 3 children, Max and Stella and Julian.
